Despite being told she would probably never walk again, CSRC participant, Rachel Harry, recently celebrated her 40th birthday by completing a walking challenge in aid of CSRC.
Rachel visits the Centre most weeks for a session on our mechanical horse, which she has named Beauty. The exercise from these sessions strengthens Rachel’s core and improves her balance - an experience she gets a lot of enjoyment out of, especially when her daughter, Freya, comes to watch.
In the run up to her 40th birthday - a milestone she never thought she would reach – Rachel’s family set her the challenge to walk unaided for 400 yards to raise funds for CSRC.
This walking challenge was all the more incredible when you read the journey she has been on...
In July 2012, Rachel gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl, Freya, but tragically suffered a cardiac arrest due to an undetected blood clot, resulting in a hypoxic brain injury, she was given just two hours to live. Specialists explained that no-one had survived such a massive trauma.
Rachel's heart was restarted however, at the time, she was given the news she would be unable to walk or even feed herself – for Rachel, that life event marked the start of an incredible journey to regain some of her mobility.
With the constant support from her daughter, family, friends, and Rachel’s unwavering willpower to be a mum, she has been living life to the fullest.
Rachel smashed her 400 yards challenge by walking around her cul-de-sac and places she visits, including Clwyd Special Riding Centre, and raised an amazing £745 for our charity which she proudly presented to CSRC Trustee and Operations Director, Julie Cowley.
