Our horses and ponies are getting their regular pedicure and shiny shoes. Ensuring our horses’ hooves are in good order is paramount to their wellbeing – we all know what it’s like to wear old shoes that pinch!
Did you know that horses have been wearing nailed-on shoes for well over around 1,500 years.
Shoeing doesn’t hurt a horse. Horses’ hooves are made from thick layers of keratin, the same protein found in human nails and hair. Shoes are nailed on to the outer layer of the hoof, where there are no nerve endings and therefore it doesn’t hurt. The act of burning on the shoe to ensure the correct fit doesn’t hurt either.
Thanks to Charles Hughes and his team from Hampton Smithy Ltd, for ensuring that our horses and ponies are always set to stride out in style!
