Our Horses

Our four-legged team is the magic behind CSRC’s legacy. Their unique personalities, shapes and heights mean there is a favourite for everyone.

All our horses are boys (geldings), simply because they get on better together that way!

Take a look at their colourful characters below, and if a particular one makes you smile, why not consider adopting or sponsoring him? Adoptions at £10 for 12 months make the ideal alternative gift. Sponsorships from £250 go even further in helping to fund their upkeep and welfare needs. Find out more about adopting or sponsoring.

Hire of our horses:  We do not hire out our horses, unless you are an RDA Group booking a 4/5 day holiday, or an RDA Group wishing to be affiliated to the Centre for permanent weekly sessions.

  • Billy

    13hh, piebald, Irish cob

Billy is a very jolly pony, always pleased to see everyone. He has a lovely nature, is willing and honest and loves his home comforts. Billy is quite flat backed which is ideal for our clients that require the use of a pad or sheepskin saddle as they can get a much better connection with the horse’s movement.

  • Boots the cat

OK so he’s not a horse, but he has four legs and spends most of his day hanging out with the boys on the yard and in the fields. Boots was a stray that found his way to us - unclaimed, he decided to stay and became a permanent fixture on the yard. He is extremely affectionate and charms everyone he meets – he also does a great job of keeping rodents away.

  • Coco

    16.3hh, strawberry roan, Belgian Ardennes

As his name suggests, he can be a clown, but he is a very intelligent horse. Despite his build, Coco is surprisingly light on his feet, he has a lovely stride and likes to ‘strut his stuff’ - he truly believes he is John Travolta! One of Coco’s favourite pastimes is seeing how many fence posts he can knock down!

  • Erik

    16.3hh black, French Percheron

Bred in France, Erik served as a stallion until he came to the UK as a gelding. Erik is a strikingly handsome, gentle giant with a kind and willing temperament. He is the Boss of all the horses. Despite his size, Erik is a true sweetheart and has the kindest eyes. He is careful with his feet and always puts his riders first.

  • Firefly

    14hh, Welsh pony

Firefly is an extremely laid-back chap. He is never in a hurry and has a cute and inquisitive personality. Firefly is a versatile pony as he is both ride and drive. As well as being a firm carriage driver, Firefly also partakes in ridden sessions and hippotherapy.

  • Glen

    14hh, Grey, Highland pony

Some of you may remember Glen from when he was previously at the Centre as a ride and drive pony. Glen has returned from his loan home where he has been for the past seven years. He is a very gentle horse and likes the slower side of life. We’re sure you’ll see this familiar face plodding along in a few of the RDA sessions.

  • Harvey

    15hh, skewbald, Irish cob

Harvey is such a character with his head being half brown and half white. A real asset to the team, he provides a lot of participants with a safe and sturdy ride. He is one of our ‘do it all’ horses and he is a regular at the RDA National Championships, having had many placings under his belt.

  • Little Jack (LJ)

    13.2hh, dark brown, Welsh cob

LJ loves attention and being groomed. He is very charming with a cheeky expression and is so laid back he would fall over. He is reliable, steady, gentle, and gives children confidence and stability. When LJ is used for the RDA holidays, his rider always wants to take him home. We always joke that if we could clone LJ and have a variety of sizes, we would!

  • Mack

    13.3hh, strawberry roan, Welsh cob

Mack is a very flashy pony with his blonde coloured mane and tail - he is often mistaken as the Barbie horse of the group which he takes as a complement! He's a brilliant driving pony and competes at the RDA National championships. Mack is kindly on permanent loan from Dawn Forrester.

  • Moo

    14.2hh, piebald, Irish cob

Moo has a good temperament and attitude, a kind eye and is an easy horse to work with. He is a very popular and useful horse. Moo has is an incredible moustache which, when left to grow, gives him the perfect Poirot moustache. Kindly gifted by Mrs Helen Baker.

  • Mouse

    14.1hh, Fell pony

When Mouse looks at you with those beautiful big brown eyes you just can’t pass his stable without giving him a pat. He is a generally ‘all-round’ chap who is a favourite of many riders. One of his favourite things to do is lie down and can often be seen in the stable or field taking a quick nap.

  • Obi

    14.1hh, piebald, Irish cob

Obi has a lovely temperament. He has a very unusual thin white line in the shape of a bullseye around his bottom. When he's in his stable, Obi often makes a noise when he wants attention. Obi is used for all the activities at the Centre, and you can tell he loves being with the riders and volunteers.

  • Rodney

    13.2, Cob

Rodney is a very friendly pony and loves attention! He is our newest ride and drive cob and is settling in well. He loves his food and is definitely more slow than go. His best friend is Firefly, both being very inquisitive and easy-going ponies!

  • Swlltyn

    12.2hh, bay, Welsh section B

Despite being one of our most mature ponies, Swlltyn is fit as a fiddle. Some struggle with his lovely Welsh name, so we all call him ‘Sucky’. Swlltyn did retire but found his way back to CSRC and his return turned out to be beneficial for him as we can tell he loves the work. Kindly gifted by Mrs Janet Jones.

  • Ted

    13hh, bay.

Ted is kindly on loan to us from Annie Midwood. Ted is a cute little pony who has taken to RDA life very well and helps out in our hippotherapy sessions.

  • Thor

    15.2hh, black, Welsh X

Thor is an extremely handsome schoolmaster who is very well trained. He is the perfect horse to help our experienced riders improve their skills. Thor is also happy to step it down a gear for those wanting a more relaxed pace. He is used for regular sessions as well as para dressage.

  • Zack

    15.1hh, chestnut, Welsh section D x thoroughbred

Zack has been at CSRC for over 20 years, on loan from World Horse Welfare - making him the longest single placement they've ever had. He is a remarkable horse who has given so much enjoyment to so many. Zack is semi-retired, although we have to remind him as he strides out with enthusiasm to his field!
